A comment was posted asking some good questions concerning the use of a battery (in this case 12V) on a small sailboat. Given the fair likelihood of getting knocked down in a small boat and shipping some water, the writer was concerned with the various safety issues… electrocution (I think you’re reasonably safe with 12V DC, but…), gas release, etc.

For a simple knockdown, the answer probably lies in the "mount so that some water in the boat won’t have the battery underwater"… this implies that the battery isn’t in the absolute lowest part of the bilge, but in many small boats this will be easier said than done.

I found one good article covering Boat Battery Basics, which is worth a look, but in spite of seeming to remember seeing something addressing these dangers, I can’t come up with it right now.

Anybody?
