DIY Boat Owner magazine.
Made the big time now :-)
They were kind enough to do a one page about my V28 build, including pictures and everything. Neat.
Mad Mariner™ owns DIY Boat Owner and I do write paid articles for Mad Mariner's online magazine.
Classic Yacht Magazine new issue
Submitted by cac on Sun, 2007-08-26 15:08Classic Yacht Magazine has their new third issue out. Of particular note to me is an article on electric boats.
Their photography is quite nice, page layout is good. I was very unsure of one of these "turn the page" format online magazines instead of just an HTML page, but it really seems well done and works well, even on a Linux box. read more »
Devlin Surf Scoter coverage in PassageMaker Magazine
Submitted by cac on Sun, 2007-06-17 21:58If you haven't seen it, check out the Devlin Surf Scoter 26' article on page 148 of the latest PassageMaker Magazine (August 2007). Its a good writeup of a couple who had a Surf Scoter built and the writer gives a nice review, including a short test cruise. read more »
Passagemaker Magazine - Trailerable Trawlers
Submitted by cac on Mon, 2007-04-16 21:17Got my June 2007 issue of Passagemaker Magazine today. One of the cover stories is concerning Trailerable Trawlers. This is definitely worth reading if you don't normally see their stuff. Its a detailed, 15 page article with lots of pictures.
Natalie Friton covers many of the same craft that you have see on this blog: C-Dory, C-Ranger, Chesapeake Marine Design, Devlin, Nimble, Rosborough and others.
She also speaks of trailers and the requirements for trailering a boat of this type, along with some home build considerations, including a nice mention of Cheasapeake Marine Design's Trailer Trawler 28.
This article also led me back to Passagemaker Magazine's web site which I hadn't visited for a while. It has been re-worked and improved. You can register (free) and see various indexes of back issues, including some free articles.
Another addition is the Web Exclusive Articles which apparently are intended to provide further information above and beyond the printed magazine. In support of the Trailerable Trawlers article, there is a detailed discussion of the building of Greenhorn I, a home built, electric 18-foot tug.

Submitted by cac on Fri, 2006-10-20 22:20The print media world is both similar and different than the online world. Beyond the obvious physical differences (longevity, storage space required, convenience, etc.) there is the perceived or actual "value" and "authenticity". Most print media is advertising driven. Nothing inherently wrong with that (I have ads on this web site, after all :-)), but I know I've seen some magazines whose "reviews" tend to be either heavily influenced by their ad revenue, or else their reviews are just press releases. I certainly don't mind seeing the press releases... read more »
Zinio - online magazines
Submitted by cac on Sun, 2010-01-10 22:14Ran across the Zinio page today... haven't heard of them before (should have). They have lots of magazines, books, etc. available for online reading. Its a pay site that you can subscribe to, but you can also examine single issues (for a fee or sometimes free) of their magazines at least will allow you to see how you like it.
Nice way to check out some magazines that you may wonder about, but don't want to subscribe to without seeing "in person". read more »
Washed out to sea?
Submitted by cac on Mon, 2009-11-23 16:12Missed the deadline for entry, but this is an interesting thought exercise, and the results might be something to watch.
The Scenario: You're an experienced and avid open-ocean kayaker, setting off early from your favorite coastal launch point for a restorative and invigorating day on the water. You've checked with the Weather Channel and the National Weather Service, and both have predicted sunny weather, slight clouds, and virtually no wind. So, after donning some sunblock and checking your gear and supplies, you're off. read more »
DIY Boat Owner
Submitted by cac on Sat, 2009-10-17 22:22This is a nifty looking "hands on" type boating magazine that has now been purchased by Mad Mariner. They are offering subscriptions at a lower rate than before, so might be a good time to check it out.
For months now, Mad Mariner readers have been telling us they want more to read on do-it-yourself projects. We heard you -- and we are proud to announce the acquisition of DIY Boat Owner. read more »
