Diesel Duck video tour

I've long had a real love/desire for Buehler's Diesel Duck designs and have followed the building of many of them. Pro-Tech Marine did the following video "walk throughs" that you might enjoy.

I especially like the soft enclosure on the cockpit area... nice compromise between deck space and cabin space to me:

And this last one lets you really see the inside: read more »

More info. from Gerd Muller

Make sure and check out the info Gerd left in his recent comment. He has some great steel origami designs that are really worth a look.

DarMI's launch

Alex has another couple of videos up covering the initial launch of a nice Brent Swain origami steel sail craft... video moves a little slow at times, but its always fun to see another successful launch.

Switchable Magnetic Ground Clamp

Alex Christie, moderator of the Origami Boats mailing list, recently put together a little video review of a Switchable Magnetic Ground Clamp. Looks like it could be quite handy if you're welding, especially metal plates.

Note that Alex also produced what is supposed to be a very nicely done DVD package showing the build sequence of a Brent Swain Origami boat. I haven't seen it, but plan to order it:

...there is still available the 3 hour DVD set detailing the construction of an origami boat from flat sheet to bare hull, cabin and decks. $54 USD, shipped worldwide.

Mobile Welding

A recent discussion on the Origami mailing list concerned the use of MIG vs. stick welding. The general consensus seemed to be that stick was preferred for their boatbuilding application due to ease of getting a good weld, and the ease of finding materials/equipment in out-of-the way places. Brent Swain has also made instructions available in the past for building a stick welder yourself out of just a few components. read more »

Steel finishing

There has been a thread recently on Origami Boats concerning steel finishing/coating. This is an ongoing discussion on every metal boat building site you can imagine, and there is never really a "final" answer. Different products come and go, and different people have opinions.

One product that was mentioned in glowing terms and after some reading looks very interesting to me is Zinga. I think this one will bear more research and watching.

Sandblaster - build your own?

If building in steel, you come to the point of needing to prepare the hull and fittings for some manner of coating. Often times this means sandblasting. By all accounts a miserable job.

You can buy sandblasting equipment, rent it, or, as Tom points out in a recent Origami Boats thread, build it. read more »
