Transom Sanding

Thursday during the day Melanie and Dane picked up the paint to get a layer on the hull bottom. We close to sanded out (as best as I'm getting it... it won't be nearly as nice as a lot of the perfectionist builders out there, but it's my boat/build and we'll go with it). Thursday evening Dane sanded the transoms and motor well area for me. Came out really nice. I did some on the bow, finishing some stuff up. Wednesday, during the keel sanding routine, I had washed most of the hull down fairly well, trying to get most of the dust and dirt off.  read more »

Keel sanding

Got my little sander busy and between us we pretty well got the keel and keel/hull fillet sanded tonight. Did a bit more fairing and fixing little places.

It's getting close to as good as it's going to get for hull smoothing and fairing.

Time = 1.75 hours

Who says sanding is a pain?

Everybody always says sanding the boat is a real pain... didn't seem that hard to me at all. Dane loved the chance to get back into things. We've had a dry spell where most of the build activities were things that he couldn't really help with. Well, he can run the random orbit sander just great.  read more »

Keel fillet

Had a nice weekend at the lake with some friends... they skied, Dane came really close, he kneeboarded, we all road the jetski. All manner of fun on a quiet lake. It's important to remember the end goal of all this, sometimes (besides the fun of building the thing).

Looking better (?)

Got home and (after fixing the faucet) got to work on the boat again. In better light, and with the epoxy dry it was easier to see what kind of "mess" I had to work with.  read more »

Ups and Downs

Tonight I worked on fixing some of the problems with the sheathing that I found on the bow yesterday. That didn't come out as nicely as I wanted. More of the sheathing than I thought hadn't bonded to the wood under it. For whatever reason, I didn't seem to get a good take on that. Of course the fact that the bow area on one side was the last part I did, and I was very tired might have had something to do with it. The other side of the bow where my Dad did it (and much earlier in the day) came out much nicer.  read more »

Keel sanding

Well, had a tremendous thunderstorm (2.2 inches of rain) during my afternoon boat-working time, so didn't get to do much.

Went out for a bit after evening service and supper and sanded on the keel. Since there were more seams there, I was curious how it was going to finish out. Seems to done pretty well. I'll need some fairing at the keel/hull joint, but it's not bad.  read more »

Two part day...

Amazingly, after my day yesterday, I could even move this morning, and even felt like trying to attack the boat a bit more. I really want to finish the bottom of the hull :-)

Got up and went out and put Xynole on the keel/skeg. Don't know that the "joint" with the hull bottom is going to come out as smooth as I would like, but I guess enough sanding will fix anything.

It's sheathed

Man what a day...

Up fairly early (at least for a holiday) and out to the boat. Got some "before" pictures. This will be one of the only "morning light" pictures you'll probably see of this hull.

Blew off the dust and laid out the Xynole. Got things set and started applying epoxy. Over and over and more and more.  read more »

Cleaning

Getting ready for the sheathing party tomorrow I spent a little while cleaning things up around the boat. Drag off some of the old plastic from the cover, straighten out the tarps, pick up scrap wood... pick up more scrap wood. There were a lot more "odds and ends" scattered around that had been dropped than I thought.

Took down the cover frame... now if it will just not rain for a day or so. It wasn't going to work well around what we need to do tomorrow, and the plastic has disintegrated and will need to be replaced before that is used again.  read more »
