Kalakala - The World's First Streamlined Vessel

Another interesting Navagear post recently included some pictures of the now defunct and abandoned Kalakala (scroll down part way). From there I found the web site of the ship itself, with lots of pictures of her from her heyday.  read more »

Return of Ocean Liners?

Interesting article with some comparisons on fuel efficiency/use between the classic ocean liner's of old and modern aircraft. The modern jet age has caused the ocean liners to fade away. Today, there is only one ship plying the North Atlantic with regularly scheduled service - the Queen Mary 2.

Model of Titanic built from original plans

This Daily Mail article details (with pictures) an incredible, multi-year, multi-million dollar effort to build an exact 1:48 scale model of the Titanic. Complete with fiber-optic interior lighting, scale furnishing (including each exterior cabin), this is an 18 foot long "model".

Cargo Ship with supplemental Kite Power

Launching today (Tuesday, the 22nd) on a voyage from Germany to Venezuela, the 462' MS Beluga will be using a SkySail to provide an expected 20% fuel use savings. Pretty slick as we come full circle from sail to power moving back to sail. Wonder when we'll see more "personal" versions of this type of sail.

Check out the Telegraph's article for details.  read more »

With the growing need to save fuel, do you think we'll see more of this?
