The passing of an icon
Submitted by cac on Wed, 2009-05-27 23:51I am sad to pass on the news that this past Sunday, May 24th, the home building and boat design world lost Phil Bolger. A posting by his wife Susanne Altenburger on the Bolger mailing list has lots of background about his life and end days.

Submitted by cac on Thu, 2007-09-06 03:00The bane of the electric vehicle world (cars, boats, whatever) is energy storage, the density of that storage (how much power can you cram in the space), and how long it takes to charge. Often charging time can make a big difference in the practicality of a device. If I can recharge my car in an hour or two it may be much more practical than having to ensure 10-12 hours "parked" on a charger.

Giant solar-powered boat unveiled

On Board the World's Most Powerful Tugboat

Impressive boat. Don't think it's really the most powerful, but definitely big and modern. Also of interest to me is that Savannah isn't that far from my place here, and you don't hear about it being a major port that often (even though it is).
Plastic Bottle Boat - Plastiki

Built of 12,500 plastic water bottles (filled with CO2), the Plastiki is a 60' twin-masted sailboat. Pictures are at the link.

Adrift for weeks
Submitted by cac on Wed, 2009-11-18 23:05A group of men from Papua New Guinea have been rescued after more than two months adrift in the Pacific Ocean.
One died near the end of their "voyage" after getting in the water to retrieve needed supplies that had blown out and they were all too weak to retrieve him.
