The passing of an icon
Submitted by cac on Wed, 2009-05-27 23:51I am sad to pass on the news that this past Sunday, May 24th, the home building and boat design world lost Phil Bolger. A posting by his wife Susanne Altenburger on the Bolger mailing list has lots of background about his life and end days.

Submitted by cac on Thu, 2007-09-06 03:00The bane of the electric vehicle world (cars, boats, whatever) is energy storage, the density of that storage (how much power can you cram in the space), and how long it takes to charge. Often charging time can make a big difference in the practicality of a device. If I can recharge my car in an hour or two it may be much more practical than having to ensure 10-12 hours "parked" on a charger.

Three years across the Atlantic
Submitted by cac on Wed, 2012-01-25 23:54OK, not really an Atlantic crossing in the normal sense. A boat left adrift off Nantucket is found 3 years later in Spain. Outboard motors still attached, some gear still aboard.

The Sea Shadow was a testbed of the U.S. Navy for stealth ship technologies. She's been out of service since 2006 and the Navy wasn't able to find a museum willing to take her on. read more »
Royal Yachts
Submitted by cac on Wed, 2011-03-16 21:49CNN has an interesting article on various Royal yachts (or superyachts) from countries around the world. Seems yachts are dying out of favor with various royal families... sad to see them go.
Abandoned boats - what a problem
Submitted by cac on Tue, 2011-02-08 19:12This USA Today article is from a bit ago, but I don't think things have really changed all that much yet. Hopefully it will get better, but it seems abandoned boats have always been more of a problem than you might think. Just look at the number of boats that sit in marinas, slowly rotting, and those have people paying for their slip. With the economic issues that we've seen, people just can't pay for them.
