Glue worked

Printer-friendly versionSend to friendPDF versionWell, no real progress, but got out the stem piece that I glued up the other day and examined the glue job. I've had fits getting consistent layups when I'm laminating two boards together... don't quite understand it. The previous attempt at the stem wound up with part of it glued very nicely, and another part like I hadn't applied any glue at all. Even if it was glue starved, it seems odd to me that I couldn't find any sign of it. The part that was glued was really glued... I couldn't pull it apart by hand, but the other end wasn't attached at all.

This one came out nicely... it's really stuck together like it should be, although I wound up with a fair amount of glue dribbled down the side that needs cleaned up (quick pass with the planer should take care of that).

I'll bet you are having glue problems due to short or incoplete mixing times. I have found that thorough mixing is the most important part of using epoxy. Try using some clear mixing cups...you will probably see unmixed areas even after 2 or 3 minutes of mixing a SMALL batch. Several builders recommend mixing by weight...not volume. good luck. I am considering doing a 32 or 36 foot boat in the same general style...so I'll keep a close watch on YOUR PROJECT! dick hartley, central florida gtsotrok@msn.com RHartley247@live.com....(if I can get this new system to speed up)

Clear mixing cups

That's a good thought. I've heard/seen reference to mixing issues before, but it just didn't seem like that could be it. You are right about the cups... I use some opaque white cups... I'll try something clear so I can see a bit more what is going on.
