Matthew Geier of Australia has taken an old family boat and electrified it. Along the way, he's made a very nice writeup of his trials and created what looks like a really nice boat.

I've been worried more and more about my plans to go electric. Mostly because I just don't see many people doing it with "power" boats. Lots of people use electric on sailboats as auxiliaries, but not many on power. Here's an example where it seems to be working well.

great article fellow Nordic owner! I own "Avior" the boat Michael Smith sailed from Port Hacking to Port Stephens solo in the 1980s as featured in Cruising Helmsman. I can fully appreciate your efforts as I bought my boat as a wreck 6 years ago and am now on my third refit!! Keep up the good work. Nick. Lake Macquarie.

Lack of electric 'power' boats

I think the main reason is most people think 'speed boat' when they think boat - a planing hull boat with lots of speed and power. It's just not practical to electrify a speed boat, unless you have lots and lots of money to spend. Power to weight ratios and all that sort of stuff. An old style 'put-put' boat, with a displacement hull, designed for a low power petrol or diesel engine on the other hand, are prefect candidates. But a slow boat isn't what most people want. They want speed.
