I am a welder by trade and I use the Sub-Arc frequently which utilizes a powdered flux containing silica. After breathing this stuff for a short time, the air passages feel like they've been stripped of their outer layer, painful. The only way to protect yourself from any airbourne particles is with a properly fitted respirator rated for the application you are doing. You have one set of lungs, it's your job to protect them.

Appreciate the kind words... I know there haven't been much in a while, but things just haven't happened on the boat in a while. I have found that boat-building really is as time consuming as people said and I couldn't believe, and life hasn't quite allowed that for a time. I really am hoping to get back to it soon.

Have some re-work, repairs (boats age even just sitting outside) and then see if we can get that thing in the water.

id love to know if there are any updates as i have just spent the last 2 days reading through the build up and i love it (i think i have found the boat that i want to build, after years of searching) you should think about putting a build thread on the wooden boat forum ( http://forum.woodenboat.com/forumdisplay.php?1-Building-Repair ) everyone there would love to see it (even the designer posts there )

Doesn't the marina have security to lessen the occurences of burglary? Not that it will prevent it from happening but a guard, or two, on duty going around the harbor every few minutes will at least make any small-time thief think twice.

Just don't know if its worth it. I just boat a Minn Kota 30 thrust for $100 bucks new at Walmart.

Yes, I made the same mistake, I bought the study plans for "wild onion" which was a plywood version of an earlier boat "wild oats" designed by Wiliam Atkins, the former design by his son John Atkins. I was hoping on some construction details but as the previous submitter states......information is taked directly off their website.....what a rip.

Okay I think that the concept is good - really cool, but wont' hold up long if you are in saltwater, also, it's a bit noisy for those that are trying to sneak up on fish to catch them.Very cool gadget though. dave from LovesOasis

  • Mad Mariner™ magazine   33 weeks 2 days ago
Mad Mariner and DIY Boatowner has a great product and perfectly terrible execution. Their customer service is abysmal. There is no one to answer the phones in the office or to assist customers. For example: they sell downloadable content however there is no one available to assist customers if there is a problem. They would be better off focusing on developing good content and outsourcing the fulfillment to Amazon or any of the many other companies that have this as a core business focus. At this rate, they will completely alienate their customers (and their advertisers) and be out of business in no time.
