Cabin top grabrails
Submitted by v28build on Tue, 2009-06-30 23:12Got to work a while tonight and decided to tackle my proposed design for the cabin top handrail/grabrails. The first try came out pretty well, so I finished making them.
Just cut/routed wood, but I think they will work and they look pretty good.
As you can see, they aren't attached yet, but I think they look decent.

Waterway cleanup
Submitted by cac on Tue, 2009-06-30 22:02This is a nice article about a couple of different designs being used for waterway and harbor cleanups. It's really nice to see the trash coming out of the water instead of going it.
And for those that enjoy "different" designs on boats, some of these trash pickup craft are pretty slick.
Comment spam
Submitted by cac on Tue, 2009-06-30 21:56As you may have noticed, for some reason we've been getting a lot of strange, off topic comment spam here. I'm not really sure what their goal is, but it's annoying.
I've tried to modify the spam blocking service I use, but it has still been getting through, so I'm forced to go to anonymous posting approval.
If you are a registered user, you can still post after logging in. If you are posting anonymously (not logged in), it will not appear until I approve it.
Sorry about that...
Wireless N2K wind & more, Tacktick style
Mission accomplished! I tried integrating a Tacktick wireless sensor and display network with a NMEA 2000 sensor and display network, and the results were quite good. The depth seen on the remote above is coming from a Maretron DST100 in Gizmo's bottom. The Micronet system is also getting Heading, Speed through Water, COG/SOG, and more from the N2K system, which it can display and/or use for Tru read more »
NMEA 2000 opens up, in a Dutch attic!
I love this photo. It may look messy, but not only is one man's fine N2K+++ yacht system being tested here, but the standard itself is getting explored, possibly to the benefit of many boaters. This is Kees Verruijt's attic somewhere in the Netherlands and, as explained on his new Yacht Electronics blog, that Commodore PET is the "PC" he first learned programming o read more »
Perko, Inc.
Submitted by cac on Sun, 2009-06-28 23:38Saw a posting about a new line of LED lights by Tim Flanagan of Navagear. Looks like a nice line of lights.
I hadn't really looked at Perko before... neat looking supplier. They carry a wide range of boat supplies, lots of lighting and electrical, deck hardware, etc.
Don't know where to start
Submitted by v28build on Sat, 2009-06-27 22:45Recently I've been a bit discouraged on the V28 build, mostly since I couldn't seem to "get anything done". Either I didn't have time to work, didn't feel well, weather didn't work out, or if all that came together, some things just hadn't "worked" and I felt I was spinning my wheels a bit.
Well, today was a nice turnaround! (Note, this is a long, picture heavy post)
Got started about 2pm (family activities were a bit earlier than normal today) and that was after the required Home Depot run to get wood, etc. read more »
Graphene - basis of a new battery technology?
Submitted by cac on Sat, 2009-06-27 21:15Another new technology being examined for battery use. Actually ultracapacitor use, but...
I don't know if it will fly, but if you are into computers, silicon chips, carbon nano-tubes and the like (well, some of us keep up with more than boats :-)), then read up on graphene.
Being able to "easily" create a single atom thick layer of anything just boggles my mind. read more »
