New Puget Sound Maritime blog
Submitted by cac on Wed, 2008-12-31 16:54From the producer of the great Navagear blog comes a new offshoot that you may want to check out. From his announcement on Mad Mariner™:
For over a year, I've tried to strike a balance between relevant, on-topic gear and gadgets posts and fascinating, off-topic regional maritime stories. A lot of the great stories I've encountered were so far off-topic that I was obliged not to include them on Navagear at all. It's been a bit of a struggle. read more »
Harry S. Truman - in Lego
Submitted by cac on Wed, 2008-12-31 12:28You may have seen this incredible model before, but its worth another look. That has to be more work (and definitely more discrete pieces) than any of the boats we're building :-)
Spectacular Norwegian port of Ålesund
Submitted by cac on Tue, 2008-12-30 11:27DeepSea Power and Light
Submitted by cac on Tue, 2008-12-30 11:19DeepSea has some really slick underwater lighting systems for boats. Apparently they supply lights for deep sea submersibles and other applications and have branched out into transom lights and other cool looking effect lights for boats.
LED's, Xenon, all manner of things. The photo gallery is worth checking out.
Japan Woodworker Tools and Supplies
Submitted by cac on Mon, 2008-12-29 12:47Many boatbuilders swear by some of the various Japanese style pull saws, scrapers and the like. I ran across this online (and physical if you're near Alameda, California) store that carries a large variety of such tools.
I have no experience with them besides seeing their web page, but might be worth checking out.
British Carrier design
Submitted by cac on Mon, 2008-12-29 10:40The Royal Navy is designing their next carrier. Neat article with details about the ship and the building and design process. Its going to be too large to build in their existing facilities, so their are going to build it piecemeal and then assemble the chunks Lego style.
Ranger Tug R29
Submitted by cac on Sun, 2008-12-28 20:08I want one!
PassageMaker Magazine's latest issue has a brief blurb about Ranger Tug's new 29' Tug. They have preliminary drawings and information up on their web page.
A capable looking little boat with a base list price of $239,937 plus freight, tax & options... not bad.
Window Sills and Hatch covers
Submitted by v28build on Thu, 2008-12-25 23:12After much excitement and family time doing Christmas most of the day, I took a bit of time while Dane played with the new Wii and worked on the boat. read more »
More turbines
Submitted by cac on Thu, 2008-12-25 21:20After the article on hydrokinetic turbine the other day, Bob was kind enough to point out that the article was incorrect saying that it was the first such installation... there is another by Verdant Power in New York's East River. They have computer simulation videos and the like on their home page.
Thanks for the info, Bob!
Shipbreaking in Bangladesh
Submitted by cac on Thu, 2008-12-25 20:34Some fascinating pictures and information about the manual shipbreaking that occurs in Bangladesh... men working in horrible conditions dismantling old, no longer needed ships from around the world.
Hard to believe they can do that all by hand.
Also makes me think about the many blessings my family and I have.
